It doesn't mention it in the quest log that you can do it, but you can. I don't know why the other people in the thread claim you can't, because you certainly can .

- Extract the zip file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\Modules - Start the Bannerlord launcher and then tick Developer Console in the Singleplayer > Mods tab. -- Navigate to "Modules > DeveloperConsole > bin > Win64_Shipping_Client" in your game files.
Wait for them to get into a war or two, and ideally lose a big fight (you'll get the spam that a bunch of their lords were captured). Then go to town. Literally. Take a town from them. Probably Sturgians, or maybe W-Empire. They both usually suck. Wait 'til they're in a war with someone maybe. WE is too central.
If you want to join a kingdom, find a castle in the area and speak to the lord inside. If there is no lord, try a different castle. When you get to a castle lord, tell him that you wish to fight for the kingdom. They will offer you a mercenary contract and pay you for each battle you win in their favor. This also allows you to join up on armies
Perhaps the banner could have added a dynamic to the game where if you go to Istiana (the Imperial rout) it would make convincing imperial clans easier and cheaper, but also make non-Imperial clans harder and more expensive. The opposite would of course be true if you join Arzagos (the anti-Imperial rout). I just wished TW would start doing
